Who We Are

Periods should never stand in the way of a woman’s dreams. Menstruation should not silence a girl in the classroom, force her to miss school, restrict her movement, or diminish her confidence and self-worth. It is a natural part of life—yet for millions of girls and women, it remains a monthly burden marked by fear, shame, and exclusion.

In Nigeria alone, over 27 million women and girls lack access to basic menstrual products. This reality is driven by poverty, cultural stigma, limited access to menstrual health education, and inadequate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities. For many girls, the inability to afford sanitary pads means resorting to unsafe alternatives such as rags, tissue paper, or leaves—putting their health, dignity, and safety at risk.

The consequences are far-reaching. Girls miss school, fall behind academically, and in some cases drop out entirely. Women are unable to work or participate fully in economic and social life. The silence surrounding menstruation reinforces harmful myths and deepens gender inequality, leaving young girls unprepared, embarrassed, and isolated during a critical stage of their development.

This is not just a Nigerian problem—it is a global crisis. More than 500 million women and girls worldwide experience menstrual poverty. Across Africa, the impact is especially severe. In Kenya, 65% of girls cannot afford sanitary pads, while in South Africa, girls miss up to five days of school every month simply because they are menstruating. These lost days accumulate into lost opportunities, limiting education, future earnings, and long-term empowerment.

Menstrual health is not a luxury—it is a human rights issue. Access to menstrual products, education, and safe hygiene facilities is essential for gender equality, public health, and sustainable development. Until menstruation is addressed openly and responsibly, shame and silence will continue to hold girls and women back from reaching their full potential.

Ending period poverty means restoring dignity, keeping girls in school, empowering women, and ensuring that no dream is paused simply because of a natural biological process.
